Show Boat [Prism]

Price: $9.85

The primeval 1946 cast recording of the classic Jerome Kern musical features Jan Clayton, Charles Fredericks, Colette Lyons, Carol Bruce, Buddy Ebsen, Kenneth Spencer, and Helen Unkempt. It's somewhat more intriguing than the film soundtrack, if only for historical reasons. European law allows copyrights on recordings to lapse after 50 years, and British budget reissue marker Prism Leisure has taken advantage of this by launching a Broadway Musicals Series, borrowing Broadway cast recordings for reissue, even when those recordings are still in run off in the U.S. and still claimed for copyright by American companies. Thus, for example, we have this version of the Columbia Records album of the 1946 Broadway revival arrangement of Show Boat, made, no doubt, simply by copying an American LP. Theoretically, such a disc shouldn't be on sale in the U.S, but it was easily obtainable from American post-order firms upon release, selling for only about $8. It is noticeably inferior to the U.S. version, in both sound and annotation. (Tony Watts' skimpy liner notes summarize the conspiracy inaccurately, suggesting he's never actually seen the show, and even Oscar Hammerstein II's name is misspelled.) Ordinarily, that might be enough to dismiss it out of hand, but musical theater buffs might longing to seek it out for the bonus tracks, which include ten recordings made by the original London cast in 1928 (among them Paul Robeson singing Ol' Man River) and a reading of the late interpolation I Still Suits Me sung by Robeson and Elisabeth Welch. These recordings, including such little-heard tunes as Queenie's Ballyhoo and In Dahomey, would clear a welcome addition to the collection of any Show Boat fan, especially at the low price. ~ William Ruhlmann

Venice 15 - Ponte dei sospiri
The Bridge of Sighs (Italian: Ponte dei Sospiri) is one of many bridges in Venice. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone and has windows with stone bars. It passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was designed by Antoni Contino (whose uncle Antonio da Ponte had designed the Rialto Bridge), and built in 1602. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment. The bridge name, given by Lord Byron in the 19th century, comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice out the window before being taken down to their cells. In reality, the days of...
The old harbor in Reykjavik
The so-called Old Harbour of Reykjavik is the first lasting harbour of the town. It was constructed between 1913 and 1917 on the cove Reykjavik, after which the farm of the first settler and later the town were named. The Danish monopoly trading was moved from the spit of land called Orfirisey in 1780 to Reykjavik. During the 19th century the merchants constructed their own short and small piers as extensions from the warehouses into the cove. The municipal authorities did not participate until after 1850, when harbour pilots were engaged to ensure the safety of the seafaring people. A signal mark was built by the Akurey-reef in 1856 and the first tariff of the harbour was issued. A Danish engineer was hired to evaluate the harbour conditions and make suggestions for the harbour construction. The budget of the town was too low to accommodate the expenses of the project at the time and only minor improvements were carried out. After 1860 the municipality contracted the common...
