Olympia resident spots a familiar tugboat during Harbor Days and offers to buy it
Olympia resident Carl Seaburg and his niece, Denise, had planned months ago to visit Harbor Days — the Labor Day Weekend event that focuses on tugboats and other maritime activities along Percival Landing near downtown Olympia. But everything changed
While square-rigged sailing ships, steamboats and ferries, and ever-larger cruise and cargo-carrying vessels have made their mark on Puget Sound's maritime history, no other vessels have captured the imagination of shore-bound seafarers like tugboats. Beginning in the 1850s when the first steam-powered tugboats arrived in the Sound from the East Coast via San Francisco, company owners and their crews competed fiercely for business, towing ships, log rafts, and barges. The magnetic attraction of powerful, tough tugs both large and small is unexplainable but enduring. This book, featuring about 200 rare historic images and carefully researched text, tells the colorful story of tug boating on Puget Sound.
Tugboats of all shapes, sizes and vintages head out to the race course on Budd Inlet for the 43rd annual Harbor Days Tugboat Races and Festival Sunday, Sept. Mike Colyar also gives a quick demonstration of his 24-foot, wood burning steam launch and Carl Seaburg talks about his pending purchase of the 50-foot, 110 year-old Parthia tug. Olympia resident Carl Seaburg and his niece, Denise, had planned months ago to visit Harbor Days — the Labor Day Weekend event that focuses on tugboats and other maritime activities along Percival Landing near downtown Olympia. But everything changed when Seaburg, 82, spotted a tugboat that has ties to his family and that he had spent time on as a youth. Even better: Parthia, a 50-foot tug built in 1906, was for sale. “He couldn’t even sleep last night,” said Denise Parret of Spanaway about her uncle. Seaburg wasted no time in making his undisclosed offer and it appeared that it likely would be agreed to by current owner George Hill. Hill, who has owned the boat for 11 years, keeps it moored at Vashon Island. The tug has participated in Harbor Days before, but not last year, he said. The tug’s ideal cruising speed is nine knots, which means a trip from Vashon Island to Olympia takes about three-and-a-half hours, Hill said. Harbor Days is known for its tugboat races in Budd Inlet, but so is Seattle, he said. Parthia, according to Hill, is the winningest tug in its class during those Seattle tug races. Parthia may be 50 feet long, but it’s only 11 feet across, which makes it faster than your typical tug, he said. Meanwhile, Seaburg, who looked outside and inside the tug Sunday morning, recalled his family’s ties to the boat. His uncle, Lee Owre, worked on Parthia, a log tug, for 35 years — 1930 to 1965. The boat pushed logs around in the water and even has “teeth” at the bow, or a jagged front end for that kind of work, Hill said. It’s not just Seaburg’s uncle who worked in the tug industry, his father did, too, he said. Seaburg was a former tug boat skipper, but he died in a fire in September 1942, his son recalled. Should Seaburg become the new owner, he said he would like to offer cruises on a donation basis to visitors, or have it moored at Percival Landing, just like the Sandman tug is, and open it to the public.
