Tom's plan to quietly shut down his late father's law practice runs into an unexpected roadblock-two million dollars of unclaimed money in a secret bank account that leads to a tangled web of lies, theft, and off-shore financial transactions manipulated by powerful men who will do anything to stop Tom from discovering the truth.
No one writes about the South like Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg (All Over But the Shoutin). Once again, he lends his voice to the working people of the Deep South, and tells the story of a memorable figure in a singular time-a man on a lost stretch of dirt road along the Alabama/Georgia border.

Two Georgia boating laws changed earlier in July and one of the biggest changes is that you can now float or raft on select lakes and ponds while under the influence of alcohol. The Boating Under the Influence Statue was amended in July -- that means floatation devices like rafts or tubes are no longer listed under the law. Also, if you are boating, you are no longer required to wear a life-jacket unless you are more than 100 feet away from the shore. "Our law enforcement division certainly recommends that people abstain from using alcohol while engaging any water activity," said Sergeant Fox. "It's not something we suggest you do. Alcohol effects coordination, judgment, and it can be a dangerous situation. The new laws do not apply to rivers or streams. It also doesn't apply to every lake and pond in Georgia. Wildlife Management areas still do not allow people to possess alcohol.

I realize that this picture is quite different from the ones that I have been posting for the past few weeks. It shows a side of me that most of my Flickr contacts have not seen, and that many will find difficult to understand, especially in Europe. Today is the start of another College Football Season in the American South.
In a few hours, in Athens, Georgia, home of my Alma Mater, the University of Georgia, over 92,000 people will assemble at Sanford Stadium from all over the country to brave the mid-day heat for the first of 12 regular season, Fall Saturday games. If preseason predictions are accurate and the team escapes injuries and other misfortunes, it will then play in early December for the Southeastern Conference Championship in Atlanta, and if the stars really align favorably, the Bulldogs, or “Dawgs”, as they are called by most of their fans, will play for a National Championship in Miami on January 8.
Today will also mark the end of one era, and the beginning of...
Macon calls is self the heart of Georgia because it is near the geographic centre of the state. The city has a population of 150,000 people but the metropolitan area has 420,000. Macon sits on the fall line of the Ocmulgee River and like Augusta and elsewhere a small fort was built here, Fort Hawkins, for protection against the Indians in 1806-9. The fort was a major distribution centre for supplies in the Creek Indian War of 1813. The Creeks were forced to give up their lands. Fort Hawkins was decommissioned in 1828 and destroyed. The town of Macon was named and established in 1823. Many of the early local settlers had come from North Carolina and the town was named after Nathaniel Macon. Macon was a Congressman in Washington from 1791 and the Speaker of the House from 1801-7. He then served in the US Senate from 1815 until 1828. In the early years cotton boats came up the Ocmulgee from the coast to Macon. Later the railways supplanted the cotton boats once the railroad reached...
