LAKE ISABELLA: There is still a fair to good catfish bite on dip baits and shad. Most are two to three pounds, but some bigger to 10 pounds. Stringers of 15 to 20 fish are common. Other species have been very slow and the fishing pressure is light. For fishing information: Bob’s Bait 661-833-8657 or www. com or North Fork Marina at 760-376-1812. KERN RIVER: The Kern River has been fair for wild and holdover fish above Kernville in the bigger pools for bait anglers (crickets and salmon eggs) or flies. Most fly anglers are fishing dry-dropper rigs and have reported rainbows to 20 inches this week. In the lower river the bass and catfish bites are both fair with the bass on plastic worms and nightcrawlers, while the cats are best on clams or nightcrawlers, and all the action is in the bigger pools. Information: Kern River Fly Shop 760-376-2040 (or www. com ) or Gateway Market 760-376-2424. AQUEDUCT NEAR TAFT: Both stripers and catfish are fair to good. Some of the catfish have been good quality fish at 10 pounds or better, and they have been best on dlop baits and sardines. The stripers are mostly smaller fish now and the bite is best on blood or lug worms and sardines. Not a lot of fish on artificials. Anglers are reminded the limit on stripers is two fish greater than 18 inches, while the largemouth limit is five fish. Information: Bob’s Bait 661-833-8657 or www. BUENA VISTA LAKES: The bluegill bite is fair on wax worms, red worms, and meal worms. Fair bass action on plastics and nightcrawlers. There is also a slow bite on small catfish with most anglers fishing dip baits. Other species very slow with only the odd bass and a few carp being caught. The Taft Chamber of Commerce Trout Fishing Derby has been set for Nov. Fishing information: Bob’s Bait 661-833-8657 or www. TOP NEWS: Plants have all but ended for the season with just four locations planted this week (see trout plants). The top action: Crowley Lake continues to be good for rainbows and cutthroats from 16 to 24-inches for fly anglers fishing midges and perch fry imitations. It probably has the best fishing in the region right now, as other waters slow way down. Other decent bets include Virginia Lakes, Silver and Grant lakes in the June Lake loop, and Convict Lake. Hot Bites: Very light fishing pressure at all the lakes on the Central Coast. The few anglers fishing Santa Margarita Lake report slow to fair action for all species, with the best action early and late in the day. Bass fair on plastics and jigs with a few still on reaction baits, while the crappie, bluegill, and redear have slowed down with a few showing on small jigs. Very few catfish. At Lopez Lake, the bite has been fair for bluegill and redear with the best action on wax worms and meal worms, also a few crappie showing. Also fair action for bass. Nacimiento has had a fair bass and bluegill bite and a few crappie reports. CACHUMA: The big news is that a 4,000-pound plant of Mt. Lassen rainbows went in Tuesday this week. The largemouth and smallmouth bass bite remains fair on the rock walls, at the point by the launch ramp, and the east end of Cachuma Point. Best bite on live shad dip-netted, but cranks or plastics that resemble the shad are also pretty good, and many fish are up shallow and can be sight-fished. The catfish also remain pretty fair on cutbaits or nightcrawlers in the dam area or the area around the patrol boat docks, with fish to eight pounds reports. Carp bowfishing permits are available at the entrance gate, but few carp are near the surface now. Private boats must be inspected for quagga mussels and face a 30-day dry dock requirement before being allowed to launch. For quagga mussel and the boat launching information, log on at http://www. The marina is open with rental boats available. The boat launch remains open, but boats must get a quagga mussel inspection. Information: 805-688-4040. CASITAS: Very light fishing pressure, but the largemouth bass bite has been fair to good on reaction baits and plastics. Most bass are one to three pounds, some to five pounds or better. The bluegill and redear have slowed way down with only the odd fish on red worms or nightcrawler pieces. Carp are still slow to fair on dough baits. Crappie and trout very slow. Bowfishing is allowed here for carp, but only from a boat after 8 a. m. Lake staff must approve bows. The Santa Ana launch ramp remains closed due to low water, but the Coyote ramp is open. Private boats must be inspected for quagga mussels and face a 35-day dry dock requirement before being allowed to.
