Cupping glasses were in the news during the Olympic Games as viewers noticed the bruise-like marks on some athletes. Cupping glasses were also present in the governor’s home in St. Augustine in the 1700s. The governor probably used them for “medical” purposes rather than to enhance his athletic abilities. Spanish officials inventoried the items belonging to Florida governor Francisco del Moral Sanchez on March 22, 1737. Centuries later, I translated the list. Among the items found in his mahogany writing desk, or secretary, were six cupping glasses, which he probably used for medicinal purposes. Also in the desk were folded papers and an apothecary jar containing different colored powders, suggesting they were used for home remedies. Moral Sanchez’s inventory is much more detailed than most. Inventories from St. Augustine’s early days generally were made for probate purposes to assist in either distributing possessions among family or to pay the decedent’s debts. The governor’s possessions were listed as part of an order for his arrest for misuse of office and participating in illegal trade. His accusers claimed among other things that he was selling items of British origin, which were illegal in the Spanish colony of Florida. Taking Moral Sanchez into custody was not an easy task. Moral Sanchez tried to rally support among St. Augustine’s residents to assist in preventing his arrest. Moral Sanchez fled to the Franciscan monastery (today’s Florida National Guard headquarters) for religious sanctuary. Moral Sanchez was transported as a prisoner to Havana and then on to Spain, where he appealed his case. Eleven years after the drama in St. Augustine, Moral Sanchez was cleared of charges. The inventory of Moral Sanchez’s goods provides a list of what someone such as a governor owned. The officials impounded “a mahogany writing desk in two parts made in the English style with its locks and keys. an old abused English chest of drawers, two used mahogany writing desks made in the Havana style with locks and keys. Let’s snoop into the drawers of the desks seized by the officials. In drawer No. 1 were what seems to be a combination of personal items and some items for sale, probably to the Indians. In addition to the six cupping glasses were other glasses, china porringers and china chocolate cups. What suggests trade with Indians are 69 English axes, 94 hatchets, 182 little wooden combs and 25 wide-tooth combs. ” It held some deep red Chinese silk, a lamb of God religious medal, two pairs of new silk stockings, five chintz curtains and six caps of embroidered velvet. Most of its items were clothing or items for making clothes: gold thread, silver thread, button sets, lengths of linsey-woolsey taffeta, “Nankeen silk,” ribbon and fine wool yarn. For official duties, the governor kept in this secretary four books of the laws of the Indies. The governor owned much larger items, some of them distributed among other citizens — for safekeeping or as collateral. The items not in the governor’s immediate possession were religious pictures, boxes of sugar, saddles, gunpowder, cows, two canoes, and quite a number of silver and pewter serving pieces and 156 bundles of tobacco. Francisco de Moral Sanchez must have arrived to furnished quarters. His inventory mentioned only three stools with cane seats and a number of mirrors — and of course, the chests and desks that were seized. Parker holds a doctorate in colonial history and is executive director of the St. Augustine Historical Society.
