A look at the rigging I put on my new Ocean Kayak Big Game Angler 2.
North Coast Series: Harvests of a Harbor Town
The big problem commercial anglers faced was how long it took northern waters to open in 2005. Their season had been cut back to almost nothing. Salmon trollers couldn't fish near Point Arena until July 4, or waters around Fort Bragg until September.

A hub for covering our fishing adventures on the Chesapeake Bay. We will be logging our daily fishing experiences, including the tackle and tactics that we used that particular day. Our Blog will also frequently feature well researched opinion pieces on fishing tactics, techniques or local angling news. In essence, this blog is meant to be a detailed, complementary outlet to our youtube channel (ChesaFreak Boyz Fishing). Now, believe it or not, at the ripe old age of 22, I have been kayak fishing since I was 14 years old. You see, I HAD to start simple, because that era of kayak fishing was relatively rudimentary in its offering (just starting to gain popularity). I was just a kid with empty pockets and dreams of catching fish from somewhere other than the shore or crowded piers. At this time, I had just one decent fishing rod/reel setup that I had gotten for my birthday, but as luck would have it, I finally found a way to get myself off of the dreaded shoreline and onto the water. It just so happened that one of my best friends at the time mentioned one day while we were fishing along the shore in front of his house (the stretch of beach between Lynnhaven Inlet and Cape Henry) that he had two old Ocean Kayaks underneath the... All of the sudden, we had pulled the yaks down to the water's edge and embarked upon our first ever kayak fishing expedition. We did not meander far from shore and fished the old pound net pilings that are found about every 200 yards along this stretch of beach. We had finally done it, we were fishing FOR REAL (or so we thought at the time). It was late august of 2008, and we started catching fish that we had never caught before, Speckled and Grey Trout. We were mesmerized at how many we were catching, and though none of the fish were anything above the 15-17 inch mark, I was overcome by a feeling of pure euphoria every single time we went out on those kayaks for the rest of the summer, and it was... Nevertheless, school started up again and the water got cold, so our new found adventures were largely put on hold until the next spring. My school and general lack of gear to kayak during anything other than the "bathing suit" months may have deterred my ability to get out on the water in our good old ocean kayaks, but the time off the water actually fueled my interest into... As any millennial teenager is apt to do, I started looking online for ways to better optimize my ability to fish the vast Bay. This is when I discovered a man called Kayak Kevin. At the time, he had just released his trailers and teaser videos for his new DVD "Kayak Fishing The Chesapeake Bay". As soon as I saw the DIY crate system he had put into place and the level of sophistication and success he had in fishing all portions of the bay from a measly kayak. In this case however, it was Kayak Jesus. a true "fishing kayak", with rod holders built in just like Kevin. Well, my parents were extremely gracious and found a great deal on a brand new Tarpon 120 Angler Kayak, and, as I looked upon the beauty siting in my living room that christmas morning, I knew that this was going to be a lifetime pursuit for me. I... Of course, it was not going to be at all as easy as it seemed that Christmas day, I had and still have a long way to go in reaching the level of mastery and knowledge that Kevin has. I still remember, just a few days after installing my first little storage system with zip ties and a crate that I stole from the nearby 7-11, I was off to Rudee inlet, paddling around trolling two gulp baits for Speckled Trout. That March, I was out on the inlet every single day after school catching trout after tout and bluefish after bluefish. It was a fantastic run of fish in the inlet that spring. I felt as though I was starting to walk in the footsteps of Kayak Jesus himself. Up until about 11th grade, I stuck largely to small waters and tried my best to really figure out the various inshore fisheries. The trout run in Rudee was pretty reliable every spring, but at a certain point a lad has to try and figure out how to catch some other inshore target species.
