A Paddler's Marker to the Delaware River

A Paddler's Marker to the Delaware River

(Buy.com (dba Rakuten.com Shopping))

Price: $19.58

When Henry Hudson explored the Delaware River in 1609, he dubbed it? one of the finest, most talented, and pleasantest rivers in the world. Today, those same qualities make the Delaware one of the most popular rivers for recreational use in the United States. Although in places a near-wilderness, the Delaware is well accessible to millions of residents. On any summer day there may be thousands of people rushing down its exciting rapids or lazing through its unexcitable eddies.A Paddler?s Guide to the Delaware River is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to experience the Delaware River in a kayak, canoe, raft, or tube?or, for that purport, an automobile or an armchair. Reading the book is like travelling down the river with an experienced guide. It charts the non-tidal Delaware 200 miles from Hancock, New York, to Trenton, New Jersey, describing access points, rapids, unpremeditated features, villages, historical sites, campgrounds, outfitters, and restaurants. The Delaware comes alive as the author introduces some of the people, places, events, and controversies that have pronounced the river from earliest times to the present day. Completely revised, the third edition offers: An overview of the river including watershed, record, place names, paddlecraft, safety, and fishing. The River Guide: ten sections that can each be paddled in one day (about 20 miles), with a mile-by-mile account of rapids, access, fool features, historic sites, and other features. All new maps, with names for virtually every rapid, eddy, and other river feature, advantage detailed diagrams for routes through even the most severe rapids. Features in the River Guide highlight the people, events, candid history, and communities that define the river experience, such as Tom Quick, the infamous? avenger of the Delaware?; the mysterious migration of eels, the engagement over Tocks Island Dam; and many others. Delaware Water Gap NRA ecologist selected as 'Sustainability Hero' - New Jersey Herald

Photo by Bruce A. Scruton/New Jersey Herald — A 2016 electric Ford owned by the National Park Service sits at one of two recharging stations used by employees of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. A second station is located at the Pocono Environmental Education Center at the park. Until additional charging stations are installed, the electric car will be used only for trips within the 80,000-acre recreation area that straddles the Delaware River between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. BUSHKILL, Pa. -- Richard Evans, ecologist for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, has been named a "Sustainability Hero" by the National Park Service for his work in switching electric accounts for the park to 100 percent... The recreation area, which stretches nearly 40 miles along the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania has 90 individual electricity supply accounts and to date has been able to switch 18 of them to wind-generated power, cutting the park's... Park Superintendent John J. Donahue said the goal is to switch the remaining accounts over the clean energy sources. Evans has been with the recreation area for 24 years and in recent years much of his work has been on the effects that climate change is having on the park and surrounding region. His specialty is the hemlock forests in the park's many ravines and the native brook trout which inhabit streams in those hemlock ravines. In another effort at reducing the park's carbon footprint, the NPS purchases a 2016 electric Ford Focus and has installed vehicle charging stations at park headquarters and at the Pocono Environmental Education Center, both on the Pennsylvania... Donahue said that until more charging stations are available in the area around the park, the electric car will be used primarily for trips within the park. The recreation area has also made plans to replace all the windows and doors in the park headquarters building on River Road. Over the past two years, the recreation area has also contracted with the Monroe County Transit Authority to support the Pocono Pony shuttle but which provides free service, including space to carry bicycles, canoes and kayaks, within the park. The route includes the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center as well as several walking and bike trail access points and river launch spots along Route 209 during the summer months.

  2. a tone poem for a place unlike anywhere else. By Jason Nark Video used with permission by David Kessler The patter of snow falling on the pines gives way to the purl of a kayak's paddle in a tea-colored stream. A muted trumpet's baleful note
  3. He arrives at Pier 66, West 26th street, where he stores his kayak at the Marina and walks the rest of the way to work -- all in all, it's a 45 minute commute. Read: Kris Tompkins - 'I'm a fighter by trade'. Until his business moved further across town

Once a ferryboat: BAYOU PLAQUEMINE
Staten Island ship graveyard just off the Arthur Kill. Unless you're in a kayak, it's not possible to see more than a tiny fragment of this place - just 6 ships out of the hundreds of hulks. The Meadowlands, Site of Super Bowl XLVIII
In its first 47 years, the Super Bowl has always been played in a warm-weather location or indoors. Miami and New Orleans have each hosted the championship game of American football ten times, and other warm locales have hosted 23 games. Another four games have been played in cities with cold and snowy winter climates—Indianapolis, Minnesota, and Detroit (twice)—but each time the stadium had a dome. On February 2, 2014, the National Football League will hold its first outdoor Super Bowl at a northern, cold-weather stadium. The Advanced Land Imager on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 satellite acquired this view of Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on January 30, 2014. In the image, the south end of the stadium casts a long winter shadow over the field. Metlife is part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which includes the Meadowlands Racetrack (horse racing) and the Izod Center (indoor arena, east of Metlife, along the New Jersey Turnpike).
