Veterans protest Orono's removal of handicap access to historic island
“Do we have any idea how often these docks are used, because to be honest, as a boat user, I've never used them,” said Councilwoman Victoria Seals. “We would just beach our boat on one side of the island if we were to use them.” Mayor Dennis Walsh

We could see thousands of commuters pouring from the train and bus terminals that are visible from our room. Wave after wave of people and buses and taxis and honking traffic in the street. A perfect day to spend at the Botanical Garden in Palermo or one of the many air conditioned museums. Unfortunately, all the museums and attractions and gated parks are closed on Monday. After breakfast we talked to the concierge who confirmed the closures, and told us that the Botanical Garden would not open til Wednesday. When I asked about the Ecological Preserve near this neighborhood he said it was open and gave us walking instructions. We walked a mile south through the ritzy Puerto Madera area, past the Customs Zone near the docks to the preserve. There are supposed to be hiking paths, shaded picnic areas, beautiful views of the city and the River La Plata and 300 species of birds. We walked around the outside for a bit before confirming with a vendor that the park was closed on Mondays. We got a cool soda and sat outside the fence for a bit, enjoying the shade and flocks of parrots and other birds, and a pack of feral dogs. We decided to see if we could find a three-masted sailing ship that we had briefly glimpsed from the bus on our city tour Saturday. We walked into the Customs Zone and were not stopped by the National Policia who were guarding the parking lot. Next we went into the Buquebus terminal, which is the ferry from Buenos Aires to Uruguay. The ferry takes 3 hours to cross the La Plata River. Now we could see the tall masts of the ship we were looking for were located near the back of this terminal. But when we asked the young lady at the turista desk, she knew nothing about it and told us that the boat we were asking about was in another city. We continued on our way and within fifteen minutes we were standing on the dock alongside the Frigate Liberty, a stunning sailing ship which is used by the Argentine Navy as a "Sea School". We continued along Antartica Argentina street, passing the Ministry of the Interior and the Museum of Immigrants (closed). We ended up in the Plaza Canada, which is a pretty dreary little park except for the beautiful totem pole erected by British Columbia. We had a little rest for people watching, and then went in search of some empanadas for lunch. Next came the search for an ice cream and we found a vendor in the train station near our hotel. We backtracked through the Paseo Retiro market, looking for Argentine t shirts for the grandkids. By the time we got back to the hotel, it was 3:30. We managed to mooch around a 2-sq-mile area for 5 hours and not actually "DO" anything. I did some hand laundry, Paul read a bit and we thoroughly enjoyed the air conditioning in our room. We stopped into the lobby bar for the half pint of Heineken and got to talking with an Irishman from Alberta Canada. We decided to go back to Las Nazarenas for dinner, and order the asado grilled beef I mean if you're in Argentina, you have to eat a cow, right. While deciding what we wanted, we were served a small plate of meatballs and empanadas and selection of chimichurri , fresh salsa and marinated broad beans. Everything on the menu looked to be big servings, so I ordered a brochette of mixed meat - chicken, pork and beef, with grilled peppers and onions. I also had a house specialty, a grilled baked potato. (Baked, then buttered and seasoned and thrown on the grill). Paul ordered the grilled rib roast and rustic fries. We thought it would be like grilled prime rib, but what he got was a huge slab of beef short ribs with the rib meat still attached. The grilled meat is served on a Brasero de Mesa, which is a warming chafing pan with charcoal from the parilla, covered by a metal plate that holds the meat and keeps it warm at the table. Unfortunately, it was so fatty and tough that Paul could barely eat it. Luckily, my brochette was big enough to share, so we both ate our fill. The night was pleasant and it was a nice walk back to the hotel.
