At the end of July I got a random phone call from one of my clients (YPO Southern California) about a referral they made to a YPO guy in Texas looking for a Newport Beach event planner. I decided to explore the opportunity and interviewed over the phone and sent him a proposal. They hired me on the spot and asked me to meet with them the next week. The meeting had over 20 people flown in from all over the country and I felt like such a small fish in a big pond. I was shocked at the amount of work that needed to be done and how little I had to work with. Did I mention they needed it done in less than 6 weeks. We really needed the money and I thought my proposed compensation was very favorable so I proceeded with the job despite feeling totally overwhelmed, under qualified and very worried it might not actually be possible. After our initial meeting, the client told me I needed to resubmit my proposal because he didn't think I was aware of the "scope" before I bid on it. Who does that. I was so grateful because he was right, it was nothing like I expected. I doubled my proposal (subconsciously hoping they'd drop me. they didn't) and got right to work. The site was completely under construction, even up until 2 hours before the event where they scrambled to finish laying the pavers. I spent the first three weeks researching, talking to and negotiating with vendors and the last three weeks designing, staging and stressing. :) This was definitely the most intense project I've ever done, but it turned out to be my favorite (probably because it was such a challenge). The hardest part was definitely designing the event and selecting all the furniture. I ran into so many problems with items being out of stock and overall self doubt about my taste. I'm super happy with how it turned out. They made me change the entire plan because 70 percent of the ceiling had to be exposed and a certain distance between sprinklers. I did a lot of problem solving on this event and spent lots of time at the civic center. So many people helped make this possible for me to pull off. Mason helped me so much with the prep and breakdown by hauling all the heavy furniture and helping all night. I flew Paula into town and she watched my kids all week while I was working 12 hour days. Friends picked up my kids from school and had play dates, went grocery shopping for me, and Kenz helped with my second event while Sierra had my kids for 10 hours. Claire is in Kindergarten at Oak Grove with Mrs. The night before school I realized I hadn't bought Claire any back to school clothes (mom fail. ) and we were shocked that she no longer fit in a single pair of closed toed shoes after wearing flip flops all summer. I found a hand-me-down pair from Stella and Claire had such a good attitude, but I was dying inside. Back to school clothes were a big deal to me as a kid. I picked her up from school that day and we went shopping. Her school is pretty inconvenient because I have to park down the street and walk all the kids to her classroom for both drop off and pick up (I was super spoiled at Don Juan last year. They can't bring water bottles or reusable lunch bags and are forced to throw away everything after lunch (even if it's an unopened protein bar). the list goes on. She overheard me complaining about it all and said, "But Mom there are so many great things about my school too. " and then went down that list. I got checked by my five year old and quit my complaining after that. She was so excited when it was finally her turn to go back to school, especially because of the new clothes. Speaking of clothes, whenever I dress Artie in something really cute she tells him he's "Sooooo handsome. Claire was born with a giant melanocytic nevus. Although small nevi are common, one her size is considered very rare (1 in 500,000) and poses health risks like skin cancer, tumors and sometimes neurological complications like seizures and hydrocephalus. We were strongly advised to remove Claire's nevus and this is the collection of posts from her journey (in reverse order).
